Gasoline Water Pump Operation Guide | Safe Start & Stop Steps

Learn full safe operation of PM&T 2"&3" (WP20X/WP50 & WP30X/WP80)self-priming gasoline water pumps, including hose installation, priming water filling, 7-step startup & shutdown safety rules for irrigation & construction.

Gasoline Water Pump Operation Guide | Safe Start & Stop Steps

Introduction

PM&T WP20X (2-inch) and WP30X (3-inch) portable gasoline water pumps are widely used for farm irrigation, flood drainage, construction water transfer and emergency water supply. Improper operation leads to startup failure, no water output, engine damage or even safety accidents. This official operation guide covers safety rules, pre-start assembly, priming water filling, standardized startup & shutdown procedures to help you run the pump safely and maximize working efficiency.

1. Critical Safety Precautions Before Any Operation

Safety comes first to avoid poisoning, fire and scald injuries:

1.Indoor use forbidden: Exhaust gas contains toxic carbon monoxide. Only run the pump outdoors with good ventilation.

2.Flammable material isolation: Keep gasoline, dry grass, plastic and all combustibles at least 1m (3ft) away from the running pump to prevent high-temperature ignition.

3.Standard refueling rules:

*Stop the engine and wait for full cooling before refueling;

*No smoking, no open flames around the refueling zone;

*Prevent gasoline overflow, wipe all spilled fuel completely before restarting the pump.

4.High-temperature part warning: Do not touch the exhaust muffler while the machine is working to avoid burns.

5.Fuel requirement: Only use qualified unleaded gasoline; never mix other fuel types.

2. Pre-Start Preparation: Engine Oil Filling(First-time Use)| Hose Connection | Priming Water Filling

2.1 Engine Oil Filling for First-time Use

Important: No engine oil is pre-filled from factory. Never start the engine without engine oil, otherwise severe engine damage will occur.Use only SAE 10W-30 4-stroke gasoline engine oil.

1. Place pump on level ground, remove oil dipstick.

2. Add 0.6L oil slowly. Check oil level, oil shall be between dipstick upper and lower marks. Do not overfill.

3. Wait 1-2 minutes, re-check oil level.

4. Reinstall and tighten dipstick. Wipe off spilled oil.

Prohibited:Do not mix different types of oil; do not start without checking oil level.

2.2 Suction (Inlet) Hose Installation (With Strainer Foot Valve)

image.png

1).Fit the sealing washer on the inlet connector, insert it into the pump inlet port;

2).Tighten the connector nut firmly;

3).Mount the strainer foot valve on the inlet joint;

4).Lock the foot valve and suction hose tightly with hose clamp;

5).Fully submerge the foot valve under the water surface during operation (air intake will break self-priming vacuum).

2.3 Delivery (Outlet) Hose Installation

  1. Install the gasket on the outlet joint and insert it into the pump discharge port;

  2. Lock the joint tightly and connect the delivery hose for water discharge.

2.4 Fill Priming Water (Mandatory for Self-Priming Pump)

This step cannot be skipped, otherwise the pump cannot draw water:
  1. Unscrew the priming plug on the pump casing;

  2. Fill the pump inner cavity with clean water to full capacity;

  3. Reinstall and tighten the priming plug securely.

3. 7-Steps to Start

image.png

1.  Open the fuel supply cock.

2.  Turn the throttle lever to mid-position.

3.  Close choke valve (cold start only).

4.   Shift engine stop switch to ON.

5.   Pull recoil starter rope rapidly to start the gasoline engine.

6.   Fully open the choke after the engine runs stably.

7.   Adjust the throttle lever to proper rotating speed for water pumping operation.

4. 3-Steps to Shutdown

Do not cut power directly, follow this order to protect the engine fuel system:

1.  Turn the throttle lever to mid-position.

2.  Close the fuel supply cock.

3.  Toggle engine stop switch to OFF.

4. Optional operation:water-drain operation, Empty residual water inside pump casing.

5. Extra Operation Reminders for Long Service Life

  1. Never run the pump with the foot valve exposed above water;

  2. After daily work, drain all residual water inside the pump body if you will store it long-term, to avoid frost cracking and internal rust;

  3. Keep the pump placed on flat ground during operation to prevent oil leakage and unstable rotation.

Conclusion

Mastering standardized operation eliminates 60% of common pump malfunctions. If you follow the above hose assembly, priming and startup steps strictly, PM&T WP20X and WP30X pumps can maintain stable flow and head for irrigation, flood control and construction work.
